A FEW EXTRAS!!!

The very talented Linda Weatherly S. does the artwork for both the Diana Spaulding Mysteries published by Pemberley Press and the Face Down Series published by Perseverance Press. She reads the manuscripts and supplies a choice of sketches from which the final cover is designed. Below are three of the sketches she did for
FACE DOWN O'ER THE BORDER

This is pretty close to what is at the bottom of the cover.

Sadly, the three drones on bagpipes would have been an anachronism for the sixteenth century.
The contemporary drawing from a manuscript shown below illustrates both the clothing
Scots wore then and a bagpipe with only two drones

A variation of this scene is one of those on the sides of the cover. The finished product had fewer tartans, which again were not yet in use the way we think of them today.

Below are two sketches Linda did for
FACE DOWN BESIDE ST. ANNE'S WELL

FACE DOWN BESIDE ST. ANNE'S WELL takes place at Buxton
Below are some sketches my research turned up to show what things were like in the sixteenth century. The first shows The New Hall, where guests stayed when they came to take the waters. The second is a carrying chair of the type my character, Eleanor Pendennis, uses at Buxton.

Below are two other real things I used in the plot, Poole's Cavern and one of Bess of Hardwick's tapestries.

Below is an "extra" from FACE DOWN BELOW THE BANQUETING HOUSE, the map I made for my own reference of the area around Leigh Abbey, Susanna Appleton's home in Kent:

The place is fictional, as are most of my characters. The Parish of St. Cuthburga is located approximately halfway between Dover and Canterbury. In that actual geographical location is the village of Barfreston, which is mentioned in the novel as Jennet's birthplace.

The Search for Leigh Abbey

The fictional Leigh Abbey is located in Kent, marked here with a red dot.

The following is a map of Kent from the early nineteenth century.

Several houses extant in the mid-sixteenth century have elements contained in Leigh Abbey.
These pictures were taken in 2001 when I went looking for
inspiration for the details later used in FACE DOWN BELOW THE BANQUETING HOUSE

These two photos show the inner courtyard at Haddon Hall, Derbyshire

Here's a look inside Haddon Hall's tower bedroom

And this is Haddon Hall's great hall

Rufford Old Hall, below, is in Lancashire

So is Speke Hall, which is right next to John Lennon Airport in Liverpool

Below is Athelhampton, in Dorset

And this is Penshurst, Kent, where Sir Philip Sidney grew up

Last but not least, this is the Norman church at Barfrestone
Barfrestone [also spelled Barfreston] is the geographical location of "Leigh Abbey"
